Breaking News: 22-Storey Building Catches Fire in Lagos

Emergency responders are battling a fire outbreak at the Great Nigeria Insurance House, a plaza located on Martins Street in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m., with the building, reportedly used as a warehouse for clothing materials, becoming engulfed in flames.

Potter Media News learnt from the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, that the fire started from one of the offices located on the fourth floor.

He stated that the blaze began on the fourth floor before spreading to other parts of the building. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Preliminary findings by the Shark Response Team indicate that the fire originated from one of the apartments on the fourth floor of the 22-storey building. The blaze rapidly intensified, spreading across the floor and escalating upward to the sixth floor.

As of press time, the number of casualties could not be confirmed, as firefighting operations were still ongoing.

However, the Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, stated on Wednesday that no casualties had been recorded.

According to Adeseye, the fire affected sections up to the fifth floor of the high-rise building. She explained that the blaze originated from the fifth floor and spread downward from that level.

“The building is primarily used for warehouse storage and the sale of clothing materials, with corporate offices and a few shops also located within the premises. There has been no record of casualties as firefighting continues,” she said.
