WASHINGTON — Two U.S. military aircraft were shot down during combat operations over Iran, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between American and Iranian forces, U.S. defense officials confirmed.
According to military sources, one of the aircraft was an F-15E Strike Eagle conducting operations over western Iran when it was struck by Iranian air defenses. The jet’s two crew members ejected. One airman was recovered shortly afterward, while the second was initially listed as missing before search-and-rescue teams were deployed.
In a separate incident, another U.S. military aircraft was downed amid heightened air operations in the region. Officials have not released full details about the type of aircraft or the status of all personnel involved, citing operational security concerns.
The shoot-downs represent one of the most serious direct losses of U.S. aircraft to enemy fire in recent years and underscore the intensifying nature of the conflict. U.S. forces have increased airstrikes and surveillance missions in response to what Washington describes as Iranian military aggression and threats to regional stability.
Iranian state media reported that its air defense systems successfully targeted multiple U.S. aircraft, describing the incidents as defensive measures. U.S. officials have acknowledged the losses but have not confirmed all claims made by Tehran.
The incidents come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation. However, military activity in and around Iranian territory continues, raising concerns about broader regional instability and potential impacts on global energy markets.
Defense officials said search-and-rescue operations remain a priority, and additional security measures have been implemented to protect U.S. personnel operating in the region.
Further details are expected as investigations into the incidents continue.
